C L A S S  D E S C R I P T I O N S

BALLET & POINTE

The foundation of all dance forms. Body placement, flexibility, balance, alignment, strength and technique are achieved through barre and center floor work.Physical discipline, general body awareness, and control coordinating with elementary technique and terminology. 
 
Understanding the relationship between music, rhythm and controlled movement with proper ballet technique. 
 
New and more complex material will be taught at an accelerated pace. Students will begin to learn basic ballet history and develop a knowledge and great appreciation of the great ballets, classical music and famous dancers. 
 
An advanced class combining skills from previous level classes and correlating steps to lengthy and complex combinations with correct technique, extensive terminology and knowledge of the art of ballet itself. Pointe is also offered for intermediate/advanced levels.

 

TAP

Rhythm patterns for the feet including, standard time steps, percussive styles and rhythms through the more complicated steps of the Tap repertoire.

JAZZ

We challenge our students with many different forms of jazz, all high energy But with different styles. These classes are popular with all ages and provide And added benefit of cardiovascular exercise due to the high level of energy Exerted. Jazz class is a fun and fast paced mixture of various techniques.Musical theatre is a form of theatre combining songs, spoken dialogue and dance. The emotional content of the piece – humor, pathos, love, anger – as well as the story itself, is communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Although musical theatre overlaps with other theatrical forms such as opera, it may be distinguished by the equal importance given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement and other elements of the works.

MOMMY & ME

Mommy and Me is for our baby ballerinas ages 18-20 months. The Mom/Parent will benefit as well as the dancer in this hour long class introducing movement and creativity. Each week the dancers will sing songs, learn basic dance movements and will also learn counting and rhythm using props. Mom/Parent will be there to help guide their way. Directional concepts, body awareness and spatial relations will be explored. 

COMBO 1, 2, 3

These classes combine ballet and tap to give students a well rounded dance education. Combo I & Combo II differ only in the degree of difficulty. Combo II moves at a slightly quicker pace and introduces more advanced steps that build on steps learned in Combo I. In the ballet portion of both classes students will review basic positions and steps and begin to increase in difficulty. In the tap portion of this class students will learn rhythm and work on the intricate steps found in tap. Combo 3 will also include beginner jazz technique. They will learn to combine steps together to make tap sequences. Class Attire: Black/pink leotard, black/pink tights, pink leather ballet shoes, tan/black tap shoes, ballet skirt optional.

HIP HOP

Hip hop is a form of musical expression and artistic culture that originated in African-American and Latino communities during the 1970s in New York City, specifically the Bronx.  Here at DEA we provide students with a style that encompasses intricate movement and stylization from beginner level to advanced. This class provides a structured method of learning various Hip Hop dance movements in a fun-filled and vibrant class environment, and offers a new set of combinations and routines every time. 

CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary is a hybrid of ballet, jazz, lyrical and modern dance styles. It is a ballet-based technique that allows a greater range of movement than the strict body lines and foot work in traditional schools of ballet. Contemporary Ballet exposes dancers to a wide range of techniques that fosters versatility. This class focuses on centering, strengthening the body, increasing flexibility, improving balance, proper placement, body alignment, fluidity and emotion. The dancer learns to let the music and their own passion guide the movement.

LYRICAL

A beautiful dance form implementing ballet, modern & jazz techniques to express lyrics of songs; flowing, graceful, emotional and inspirational. Develop strength & flexibility while acquiring solid dance technique.

 

MODERN

Modern dance developed in the 20th century and is a form of contemporary, theatrical and concert dance employing a special technique for developing the use of the entire body in movements of abstract ideas.
